The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has praised President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a peaceful Christmas celebration, describing it as the first in many years without reported church attacks.
CAN President, Most Revd Daniel Okoh, made the remark on Friday after a courtesy visit to the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Lagos.
According to Okoh, Christians across the country experienced a rare sense of calm during the festive period.
“This Christmas is the first in many years that we did not wake up to news of a church attack,” he said. “It is a testimony that we must share, and we pray that it continues.”
Visit to First Family
Okoh explained that the visit provided an opportunity to felicitate with the First Family and thank them for supporting vulnerable Nigerians.
He also commended the Tinubu administration for its commitment to national progress and social welfare.
Context of Security Concerns
The commendation came amid international scrutiny following recent United States airstrikes against Islamic State targets in northwestern Nigeria.
Earlier in October 2025, US President Donald Trump designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians. The Federal Government has repeatedly rejected those claims.
On Christmas Day, US Africa Command confirmed airstrikes in Sokoto State, carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities. Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar said Nigeria provided the intelligence that led to the operation.
CAN Backs Tinubu’s Security Efforts
Responding to questions on the government’s handling of security concerns, Okoh said President Tinubu had shown responsiveness and renewed commitment.
“We are seeing clear efforts to strengthen the security architecture,” he said. “Nigerians can now go out in peace and return safely.”
Although challenges remain, CAN expressed confidence in the administration’s direction and pledged continued cooperation for national development.
