Friends, family, and neighbors met at an outdoor amphitheater by Lake Harriet in Minneapolis to honor Harper Moyski, the 10-year-old girl killed in the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church on August 27, 2025. People remembered her as bold, inquisitive, joyful, and unapologetically herself. Her mother, Jackie Flavin, spoke of the support the family has received and how it has helped when grief felt overwhelming.
The Tragedy
During Mass at the church, a former student, 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire using multiple firearms. Harper and 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel, also a student, were killed, and 21 others were injured. Authorities said Westman was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
Remembering Harper’s Spirit
Harper’s mother described her daughter as someone who “did not water herself down” and who pursued life with passion. She loved animals, especially dogs, and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. She asked bold questions, always with honesty, joy, and curiosity. Many speakers at the memorial emphasized her uniqueness and how she lived fully.
Calls for Change
At the gathering, community leaders used Harper’s life as a rallying point. They urged stronger action against gun violence and better support for mental health. Rabbi Jason Rodich encouraged attendees to find compassion in daily interactions and to connect with others, especially in hard times.
Looking Forward
The celebration of life event provided a moment of healing for many people. Jackie Flavin expressed gratitude for the love and support. She said Harper taught them all how to shine light even in dark moments. The community continues to push for reforms, safer environments for children, and meaningful approaches to reduce such tragedies.
