Dangote Files Fresh EFCC Petition Against Ex-NMDPRA Boss Ahmed

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and chairman of Dangote Industries, recently intensified his battle against former NMDPRA chief Farouk Ahmed. He filed a new petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This move followed his withdrawal of a similar complaint from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

Background of the Dispute

The conflict began in 2024 when Ahmed criticized Dangote Refinery’s diesel for high sulfur levels. Dangote refuted these claims and accused regulators of protecting fuel importers. Additionally tensions rose as Dangote pushed for local refining dominance in Nigeria’s oil sector.

The Initial Petition to ICPC

In December 2025, Dangote submitted a petition to the ICPC through his lawyer, Dr. O.J. Onoja. He accused Ahmed of corruption, abuse of office, and economic sabotage. For example, Dangote alleged Ahmed spent up to $7 million on his children’s school fees in Switzerland.

Reasons for Withdrawal

However Dangote withdrew the petition from the ICPC on January 5, 2026. Sources revealed he feared interference because Ahmed’s wife holds a key position in the ICPC. Meanwhile the ICPC vowed to continue its probe despite the withdrawal.

Fresh Petition to EFCC

Therefore Dangote shifted his focus to the EFCC. He filed the fresh petition on January 9, 2026, at the agency’s headquarters. His legal team urged EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede to investigate swiftly.

Allegations Detailed

Dangote charges Ahmed with gross abuse of office and financial impropriety. He claims Ahmed diverted public funds for personal gain. Furthermore, Dangote offered to provide evidence, citing court cases like Lawan v. F.R.N. to support prosecution.

Implications for Nigeria’s Oil Sector

This case highlights ongoing issues in Nigeria’s petroleum regulation. It could expose corruption and boost transparency in the industry. As a result, stakeholders watch closely for potential reforms.

In conclusion, Dangote’s actions show determination to hold officials accountable. The EFCC’s response will shape the outcome. Ahmed has denied all allegations, calling them baseless.
