A video has gone viral in Nigeria showing a confrontation between Lieutenant A.M. Yerima and FCT minister Nyesom Wike at the disputed piece of land in Abuja, which Yerima is guarding on orders. Wike meanwhile is demanding access to inspect for unauthorized constructions.

Wike shouted at Yerima while all this was going on. His taunts included calling the officer a fool and questioning the officer’s age. But Yerima remained patient and strong, insisting that he was only obeying commands from superiors. Also he reminded Wike of legal standards.

General O.O. Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff, issued the statement. It congratulated Yerima on his courage and professionalism. Oluyede also emphasized the discipline that the officer was brought up with in the training of the Nigerian Defence Academy. This is in response to the public outcry.

Thus he warned officials of unguarded words. He described Wike’s remarks as unbecoming. Civility was thus called for regarding armed forces members. Examples must be set up by leaders, he added.
