Atletico Madrid stun FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou
The UEFA Champions League quarter-finals first leg featured an all-Spanish clash at the Nou Camp.
The hosts succumbed to a 2-nil defeat despite dominating for a large part of the game. A red card to young centre back Pau Cubarsi swung the game in favour of the visitors.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick: “We lost 2-0 but we have a good chance in Madrid. We don’t give up, we have a chance still.”
I don’t know [about the red card], I’m not sure how much he [Pau Cubarsi] touched him. The ball was behind him.
“When the [Atleti] player touched the ball [at a goal-kick] it’s clear, why not VAR? It’s unbelievable.
“We all make mistakes, it’s normal, but this situation. Why do we have VAR? I cannot understand. Normally it would be penalty and a red card. Double yellow is a red.”Of course we believe [we can do it], second half we played well with one player less.”
Goals from Julian Alvarez and second-half substitute, Alexander Sorloth secured victory for Diego Simeone’s chargers.
The second fixture of the night saw Paris Saint-Germain put on an elating display against Premier League giants Liverpool FC.
Goals from Desiré Doué and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia capped a beautiful performance in Paris. The French giants dominated all aspects of the game but failed to convert the majority of their chances.
Will PSG pay for the missed chances in the reverse fixture at Anfield? And will Barcelona pull off a remontada at the Metropolitano?
