A 54-year-old man in Asaba, Delta State, Edward Odega, admitted sexually abusing his three daughters for seven years. However, the abuse came to light only after one of the children courageously reported him to the police.
Odega told reporters at the Asaba police headquarters on Saturday, “I have three daughters, and I started sleeping with my first daughter when she was 12 years old.” Additionally, he confessed to abusing the other two daughters, aged 13 and 15.
Police Act Swiftly After Child Report
The Delta State Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the police arrested Odega immediately after receiving the report from one of the victims.
“The command arrested a father who had been defiling his three daughters for seven years. The children are now aged 13, 15, and 24,” Edafe said.
Authorities discovered the abuse when CSP Temi Agbede Zuokumor visited a local school for an outreach program. One of the children approached her and revealed the abuse, prompting immediate police action.
Victims Receive Medical and Psychological Care
Edafe confirmed that the police took the three daughters to a hospital, where medical professionals and counselors assessed and treated them. As a result, the children are now receiving medical check-ups and psychological support.
Community Outrage and Call for Justice
The Asaba community expressed shock and outrage over the case. Moreover, child protection advocates said the incident highlights the need for stronger laws, education, and community awareness to prevent abuse within families.
Experts called for swift prosecution and maximum penalties to deter similar acts. Meanwhile, local organizations urged parents and schools to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior to authorities immediately.
In conclusion, authorities continue to investigate, and the community hopes for justice while emphasizing the protection of children.
