DHQ Dismantles Non-Essential Roadblocks Across Highways

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has ordered the immediate dismantling of non-essential roadblocks on major highways. The move aims to boost troop mobility, ease travel, and improve overall security operations.

Why DHQ Targeted Non-Essential Roadblocks

An internal memo dated December 5 and signed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu for the Chief of Defence Staff said the number of unauthorized checkpoints has grown sharply. The memo noted that these posts slow movement, strain operations, and expose troops to needless danger.

The DHQ listed several affected routes. They include Abuja–Lokoja–Ajaokuta–Idah–Otukpa–Obollo Afor–Enugu; Abuja–Lokoja–Obajana–Kabba–Omuo–Ekiti–Ikole Ekiti; Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Okpella–Auchi–Benin; Abuja–Kaduna–Kano; and Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba–Niger Bridge.

New Compliance Measures for Commanders

Under the roadblocks directive, commanders must remove all non-essential posts at once. They must also maintain only approved control points and shift their focus to mobile patrols supported by steady intelligence gathering.

The DHQ said these steps help security teams dominate wider areas, clear delays, and respond faster during missions.

Wider Security Implications

Security observers say the decision reflects rising concerns about road safety nationwide. The DHQ believes the new approach will improve movement for civilians while giving troops better flexibility on major routes.
