Edo State Rejects Attack Claim by Peter Obi, Calls It False and Malicious

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, alleged that gunmen attacked members of his political camp in Edo State. He stated this in a video after an incident at the African Democratic Congress secretariat.

Obi claimed the attack occurred shortly after he and party leaders left the ADC headquarters in Benin City. He described how hoodlums invaded the venue and targeted their convoy en route to a residence.

Additionally, the ADC issued a statement. It declared that Obi and the party’s leadership faced siege and attack in Benin. The party reported damage to property during the event.

Government’s Firm Denial

The Edo State Government refuted Obi’s allegations. Officials described the claims as false, malicious, and a misrepresentation of facts.

In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo conveyed the position. He said, “The Edo State Government has noted with concern the allegation by former Anambra State governor and Labour Party figure, Peter Obi, claiming that members of his political camp were attacked by government officials in Edo State.”

“We wish to state unequivocally that the Okpebholo administration is not, and will never be, in the business of attacking innocent Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation.”

Furthermore, the government clarified no directive targeted any political group. It emphasized that security measures aimed to maintain peace, not to intimidate.

Details of the Incident

The altercation happened on February 24, 2026, following Olumide Akpata’s defection to the ADC. Akpata, the former Labour Party Edo governorship candidate, joined after Obi’s influence.

Police confirmed the attack. Spokesperson Eno Ikoedem stated a preliminary assessment showed malicious damage to flags and shattered windows.

However the government linked the event to an internal ADC crisis. It mentioned a faction led by Roland Owie faced exclusion from a meeting at John Odigie-Oyegun’s residence, prompting police intervention.

The Edo administration accused the ADC and Obi of mischief. It suggested the claims aimed to tarnish the government’s image.Officials urged political actors to verify information before public statements. They reaffirmed commitment to safety and development in the state.
