EFCC Arrests Ex-Labour Minister Chris Ngige Amid Fresh Probes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, sparking widespread speculation across the country. Moreover, his former spokesperson, Fred Chukwuelobe, urged the public to ignore rumours suggesting that gunmen kidnapped the ex-minister.

Aide Explains Why Chris Ngige Is With EFCC Investigators

Chukwuelobe said he received countless calls after people claimed that unknown men abducted Ngige. However, he explained that Chris Ngige voluntarily cooperated with EFCC investigators and is currently assisting them.

“Ngige is with the EFCC. He was not abducted or kidnapped,” he said, adding that the situation remains under control.

Past Investigations Add Pressure on Ngige

Ngige has faced several investigations over the years. In September 2024, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission questioned him about alleged contract irregularities at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund. Furthermore, the ICPC confirmed that he answered their questions and left shortly afterward.

He also drew scrutiny in 2017 when a civil society group, the Advocates for Peace and Effective Justice Development Initiative, asked the EFCC to review the funds allegedly used to buy a $922,600 property in the United States shortly after he completed his term as governor.

Fresh Arrest Signals Renewed Anti-Corruption Drive

Analysts believe the latest arrest reflects renewed pressure on politically exposed persons. Consequently, more former officials with unresolved allegations may face questioning in the coming weeks.
