Egypt Beat Nigeria 2–1 in AFCON Warm-Up Friendly

Egypt recorded a confidence-boosting 2–1 victory over Nigeria in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly played in Cairo on Tuesday.

The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Mahmoud Saber finished from close range after a low delivery from Zizo, who troubled Nigeria consistently on the right flank.

Nigeria struggled to settle into the game early on. However, the Super Eagles came close to an equaliser when Paul Onuachu’s long ball nearly forced an own goal from Yasser Ibrahim, prompting a quick reaction from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

Awaziem Levels for Super Eagles

Nigeria eventually drew level before the break. Zaidu Sanusi’s free kick from the left slipped through El Shenawy’s hands at the near post. Chidozie Awaziem reacted fastest and nodded the loose ball into the net.

The goal briefly lifted Nigeria’s momentum, but Egypt regrouped quickly.

Mostafa Mohamed Seals Win After the Break

After the restart, Egypt regained control of the match. Their pressure paid off when Mostafa Mohamed restored the lead with a calm finish from inside the box.

The move again involved Zizo, whose creativity proved decisive throughout the contest.

Nigeria searched for another equaliser but failed to break down Egypt’s defence. The hosts managed the closing stages comfortably to secure the win.

Both Teams Turn Focus to AFCON

The friendly marked Egypt’s final preparation ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Pharaohs open their campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will face Tanzania in their opening group match a day later.
