Ekiti Court Remands ‘Lustay’ Amid Suit Against Governor Oyebanji

Ekiti Court Remands ‘Lustay’ Amid Suit Against Governor Oyebanji

An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of Akogun Abayomi Olumide, popularly known as “Lustay,” in correctional custody over allegations of conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of offensive weapons, and malicious damage.

The court granted the order following a police application, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Remand Comes Amid Legal Challenge Against Oyebanji

The remand comes weeks after Olumide filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja challenging the candidature of Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji.

However, during Friday’s proceedings, the police told the court that they arrested Olumide alongside other suspects said to be at large. As a result, prosecutors asked the court to remand him while investigations continue.

Police Link Suspect to Multiple Attacks

According to court documents, investigators reasonably suspect Olumide’s involvement in attacks on Chief Sunday Adeola, Chief Joseph Falope, Kilani Oyebamiji, Oloruntimileyin Akintunde, and others.

Police said statements from both the complainants and the suspect support the allegations. Officers attached the statements as exhibits, alongside Form K, to the remand application.

Olumide Denies Allegations

Meanwhile, Olumide denied all the allegations during interrogation at the police station.

He insisted that he is not a robber and does not belong to any robbery gang. In addition, he denied claims that he hired armed thugs or imported fake police officers to attack political opponents in Ekiti State.

Suspect Explains Presence in Ado-Ekiti

Olumide explained that on October 9, 2025, he travelled to Ado-Ekiti as part of the convoy of Engineer Kayode Ojo.

He said the visit related to Ojo’s declaration of his governorship ambition at the APC Secretariat in the state capital.

“I never attempted to shoot anyone to death,” Olumide reportedly stated, adding that he had no knowledge of any alleged importation of fake police officers into Ekiti.

Police Detail Arrest and Investigation

In an affidavit sworn by Inspector Ilori Tope of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Ado-Ekiti, the police said officers arrested Olumide on January 1, 2026.

Inspector Tope told the court that investigations revealed reasonable grounds linking the suspect to the alleged offences. Therefore, he argued that granting the remand application served the interest of justice.

Court Orders Continued Detention

In a motion dated January 2, 2026, the police requested Olumide’s remand at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre pending legal advice.

The Chief Magistrate Court granted the application and ordered Olumide’s continued detention while investigations and legal review proceed.
