Explosion Hits Mosque During Prayers on Christmas Eve in Maiduguri

An explosion struck a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Wednesday evening as Muslim worshippers gathered for Maghrib prayers on Christmas Eve, triggering panic in the city.

Eyewitnesses said the blast occurred at about 6:10 p.m. at a mosque located in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs district and the busy Gamboru Main Market. Residents reported hearing a loud detonation that shook nearby buildings and sent people running for safety.

Local sources said several worshippers may have been killed or injured. However, authorities have yet to confirm casualty figures as of the time of reporting.

Explosion Prompts Emergency Response

Immediately after the blast, residents described chaotic scenes in the area. Some people rushed to help the injured, while others fled over fears of further explosions.

International media outlets, citing eyewitnesses, said officials had not issued any immediate confirmation of deaths or injuries. Meanwhile, security operatives moved quickly to cordon off the area.

A police source confirmed that officers were on their way to assess the situation. However, the Borno State Police Command had not released an official statement at press time.

Terrorism Fears Resurface in Maiduguri

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the incident has raised renewed concerns about insurgent activity in northeastern Nigeria.

Security analysts noted that the attack bears similarities to tactics previously used by jihadist groups in the region, particularly the use of improvised explosive devices.

Maiduguri has remained the epicentre of the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009. The group and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, have repeatedly targeted mosques, markets, and other crowded public places.

Tension Heightens Ahead of Christmas

The timing of the explosion, coming on Christmas Eve, has heightened tension in the city. Christian communities preparing for the holiday expressed concern about security during the festive period.

Security agencies have launched investigations into the incident. Authorities say they will provide updates as more details emerge.
