The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reduced the cargo port charge at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) to N15 per kilogram. This decision follows negotiations with cargo handling stakeholders.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire. Announced the development in a statement shared on the Authority’s official X page on Tuesday.
The new tariff comes after weeks of resistance from Customs Licensed Cargo Agents. Who opposed an earlier proposal to increase the cargo port charge to N20 per kilogram. The negotiations aimed to find a compromise and restore smooth cargo operations at Nigeria’s busiest airport.
This adjustment expect to ease tensions in the air cargo sector, reopen stalled warehouses, and strike a balance between FAAN’s need for infrastructure funding and operators’ cost concerns.
What FAAN is Saying
FAAN explains the N15 per kilogram rate is a middle ground between its initial N20 proposal. And the long-standing N7 charge, which had been in place since 2008.
The Authority emphasized that the agreement reflects productive dialogue. And a shared commitment to improving cargo operations and infrastructure at MMIA.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reached an agreement with Customs Licensed Cargo Agents. Operating at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on the proposed review of cargo port charge,” the statement read.
The agreement was finalized during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at the MMIA Terminal 2 Conference Room. The meeting was chaired by the Director of Cargo Development and Services, Mr. Lekan Thomas.
“After constructive deliberations, both parties agreed on a revised port charge of N15.00 per kilogram. Representing a compromise between the earlier proposed N20.00/kg and the previous N7.00/kg rate,” FAAN stated.
The Authority added that the revised charge aims to enhance the ease of doing business at MMIA. While supporting sustainable development and modernization of airport cargo infrastructure.
