A federal investigation is underway after an ICE operation turned violent.
The FBI is investigating an ICE shooting in Patterson, California, following an incident involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers on Tuesday.
The shooting occurred near Interstate 5 during an attempted arrest.
According to officials, ICE officers were trying to detain a man they identified as a suspected gang member wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection with a murder.
Authorities said the suspect attempted to use his vehicle to run over an officer during the operation.
In response, officers opened fire, describing the action as necessary to protect themselves and others at the scene.
The suspect was shot and taken to a nearby hospital, though his condition has not been confirmed.
Local law enforcement, including the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by securing the area and closing nearby highway ramps following the incident.
