The Federal Government has proposed a 40% salary increase for lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The move aims to avert an ASUU strike that could disrupt academic activities in Nigerian public universities.
ASUU leadership is set to return to the negotiation table with a Federal Government delegation headed by Yayale Ahmed. The proposal comes after the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Sunday, highlighting efforts to prevent the looming strike.
ASUU Strike Talks Continue
A union member, speaking anonymously due to negotiation protocols, confirmed that ASUU strike discussions with the government are ongoing. The union’s one-month ultimatum ended last Saturday, raising tension within the higher education sector.
The Federal Government held emergency meetings in Abuja on Monday and Tuesday in a last-minute effort to avert the potential strike.
Government Insists Universities Must Stay Open
Education Minister Tunji Alausa stated that the government has substantially met ASUU’s demands. President Bola Tinubu has directed that public universities remain operational, even as negotiations continue to prevent strike. Both sides are working toward a resolution that safeguards students and ensures stability in Nigerian universities.
