George Akume asserted that many terrorists responsible for killings in Nigeria originated from outside the country. Akume, who serves as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made the statement during a book launch in Abuja on Sunday. The event honored retired Major General Ike Nwachukwu.
Foreign Origins of Attackers
Akume explained that extremists infiltrated Nigeria through porous borders. He stated, “Those who are doing the killings, most of them are from outside the country. I say what I know to be true based on security reports.” Additionally he noted that some attackers spoke French. He asked, “Do we speak French in Nigeria? No.”
Distinction from Local Groups
Akume clarified that groups like Boko Haram started within Nigeria. However he emphasized that many current attackers in forests and rural areas, particularly in Niger State, came from abroad. Meanwhile he rejected claims of targeted religious or ethnic killings.
Impact on All Nigerians
Akume stressed that terrorism affected everyone regardless of faith or tribe. He stated, “The menace of terrorism in Nigeria does not exclusively target any religious or ethnic group.” Furthermore, he highlighted that Muslims also suffered from attacks.
Call for National Support
Akume urged citizens to back security forces. He encouraged unity against insecurity. Moreover he acknowledged ongoing efforts by the government to address the threats.
Broader Security Context
The statement came amid rising violence in northern and central regions. Boko Haram and other insurgents continued operations across states. Security agencies reported neutralizing over 13,500 terrorists since 2023.
