FG Grants Automatic Promotion to Six Abducted Civil Servants

Six civil servants from the Ministry of Defence received automatic promotion after gunmen kidnapped them during official travel in 2025. The attackers intercepted the officials in Kogi State while the victims traveled from Lagos to Abuja for scheduled promotion examinations. As reported by ALO360, the abduction occurred along the busy highway and prevented the officers from participating in the career assessment exercise.

Commission Announces Decision

Tunji Olaopa, chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, announced the automatic promotion on Saturday in Abuja. He confirmed that the commission approved immediate career advancement for the six victims to address the disruption caused by their traumatic experience.

“The Federal Civil Service Commission has granted automatic promotion to these officers,” Olaopa stated. He added that the decision reflected the commission’s recognition of the exceptional circumstances that barred their examination attendance.

Furthermore, Olaopa emphasized that the commission prioritized the welfare of public servants who encountered security challenges during official assignments. Consequently, the approval aligned with existing civil service regulations concerning unforeseen disruptions to promotional processes.

Government Response

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to supporting victims of security incidents. Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Defence expressed relief that the affected staff would not suffer career setbacks due to the kidnapping.

Security agencies had previously confirmed the rescue of the victims after several days in captivity. Subsequently, the civil servants underwent medical evaluation before resuming their duties.

The automatic promotion ended weeks of uncertainty for the affected officers. Additionally, the decision set a precedent for handling similar cases involving security disruptions to official exercises.
