Ghana Condemns US Action in Venezuela as Illegal Invasion

Ghana condemns the United States’ military action in Venezuela, describing it as an unauthorised invasion that violates international law and threatens global stability. The Ghanaian government said the operation breached established international norms and undermined state sovereignty.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Ghana said the US action violated the United Nations Charter and disregarded the territorial integrity of Venezuela. According to the government, such actions weaken the foundations of the global legal order and encourage instability.

Ghana condemns US operation after Caracas explosions

The condemnation followed a series of explosions that struck Caracas in the early hours of Saturday, disrupting electricity supply in parts of the Venezuelan capital. Hours later, US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had entered Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Ghana described the development as a “unilateral and unauthorised invasion.” It warned that the action sets a dangerous precedent that could erode respect for international law if left unchecked.

Ghana warns against erosion of global order

Furthermore, Ghana said it was monitoring the situation with deep concern. The government warned that assaults on international law, foreign occupation, and attempts to control another country’s resources carry severe consequences for global peace.

“The Ghanaian Government is keenly following the situation in Venezuela with great concern,” the statement said. It added that such actions have “extremely adverse implications on international stability and the global order.”

Ghana criticises Trump’s remarks

In addition, Ghana criticised comments attributed to President Trump suggesting that the United States would “run” Venezuela until a political transition occurs. According to Ghana, such language echoes colonial and imperial practices and undermines the post–Second World War international system.

“To allow this is to put the international community at great risk and undermine the sovereignty of every country,” the statement said. “Only the Venezuelan people should freely determine their political and democratic future.”

Call for de-escalation and release of Maduro

Therefore, Ghana called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions. It also demanded the release of Maduro and his wife, urging all parties to respect international law.

The government reaffirmed its long-standing opposition to invasion, occupation, and all forms of external interference. It said these principles remain central to Ghana’s foreign policy and commitment to global peace.
