Jonathan Only Southern Candidate Who Can Defeat Tinubu, Says Adeyanju

Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju shook up political discussions with a bold statement about the 2027 presidential race. He insisted that Goodluck Jonathan can defeat Tinubu, stressing that no other Southern politician stands a realistic chance.

Adeyanju argued that the former president holds a unique edge unmatched by contemporaries. In his view, Goodluck Jonathan can defeat Tinubu because he still qualifies for one more term. This eligibility, combined with his experience, offers a bridge between continuity and fresh leadership.

Peter Obi’s Prospects Dismissed

Adeyanju dismissed Peter Obi’s chances outright. He said that even if Obi swore an oath to serve just one term, Northern voters would not trust him. According to Adeyanju, distrust runs too deep for political pledges to sway that region.

He went further, labeling many Southern aspirants as “content creators.” In his assessment, they lack the political strength required to mount a credible challenge to Tinubu.

Why Goodluck Jonathan Stands Out

Adeyanju pointed to two clear advantages for Jonathan: his prior experience as president and the absence of any constitutional barrier to another run. He argued that this rare mix makes Jonathan the only Southerner who could realistically defeat Tinubu in 2027.

To strengthen the odds, Adeyanju suggested coalition options. He mentioned a Jonathan-Kwankwaso ticket or pairing Jonathan with a younger Northern figure. Such strategies, he believes, would widen support and improve chances. Still, he remained firm that neither Atiku nor Obi carries the political weight to match Jonathan.

Wider Opposition Context

Adeyanju made these remarks as opposition parties work to build a coalition capable of challenging Tinubu’s re-election. Figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi will likely play roles in that alliance, but Adeyanju doubts their ability to win.

He also warned that Southern disunity could weaken the opposition further. With Tinubu consolidating his base and strengthening institutional control, Adeyanju urged the opposition to rally behind a figure strong enough to compete.
