The First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri was attacked by gunmen on December 14, 2025. The attack occurred during a Sunday service when gunmen stormed the church. Church going devotees fled in panic as gunshots were heard.
More than 20 people were kidnapped by the armed men who ran into the bushes. The attack affected the Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area in Kogi State, Nigeria.
Details of the Attack
The attackers arrived suddenly and fired sporadically. They targeted the congregation directly. One worshipper, known as Jayjay, died on the spot. Meanwhile others escaped amid the chaos. However the gunmen captured many and escaped quickly. Residents reported the incident to authorities soon after.
Casualties and Related Incidents
The church attack claimed one life and led to at least 20 abductions. In addition, similar assaults hit nearby Oke-Agi and Ilai communities. There gunmen killed three more people and kidnapped others. Overall, four deaths occurred across the areas. Injuries affected several residents too.
Authorities’ ResponseLocal officials responded promptly but faced criticism. Kabba/Bunu Chairman Zaccheus Dare Micheal blamed the church for holding services amid tensions. He ordered market closures for safety.
Furthermore, Mopamuro Chairman Hon. Ademola Bello confirmed the events with community leaders. Security forces arrived late, residents claimed.
