The contest for the Awujale of Ijebuland has intensified. Renowned ophthalmic surgeon and community leader Otunba Adekunle Hassan has formally declared his bid for the throne. He made the announcement before the Jadiara branch of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House at the historic Igboburo compound in Ijebu Ode.
The Awujale seat became vacant after the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years.
Notably, the event attracted traditional and civic leaders, including Oba Adenola Osunsanmi, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, and Prince Akinola Odedina.
Hassan Highlights His Experience
Hassan said he is offering himself to serve Ijebuland and build on the legacy of the late monarch. Moreover, he explained that his background in global medicine and community development has equipped him for the role.
“I believe I have the capacity, competence, and character to provide transformational leadership and maintain the dignity of the throne,” Hassan stated.
His supporters argue that he represents a blend of heritage and modern governance. Additionally, they point to his involvement in the Council of Otunbas as evidence of his connection to the palace and grassroots communities.
Next Phase of the Awujale Contest
Soon, the ruling houses will begin formal deliberations. As a result, many observers expect a competitive process that could redefine traditional leadership in Ijebuland. With visible support and a clear vision, Hassan has emerged as a prominent contender in the Awujale throne contest.
