Haze, Sunshine, And Storms Expected Nationwide, NiMet Warns

Nigeria’s weather conditions will remain mixed over the next three days, as haze, sunshine, and thunderstorms affect different parts of the country. According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), residents should expect changing atmospheric conditions from Wednesday to Friday.

In a weather advisory released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet outlined distinct patterns for the northern, central, and southern regions. As a result, the agency urged Nigerians to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

Northern Nigeria To Experience Persistent Haze

According to NiMet, northern Nigeria will experience mostly sunny but hazy weather throughout the forecast period. Dust particles will remain suspended in the atmosphere, which may reduce visibility at different times of the day.

Furthermore, the agency noted that the hazy conditions could persist for long hours, especially in the afternoon. Because of this, residents are advised to remain cautious, particularly while commuting or traveling long distances.

Southern States To Record Clouds And Thunderstorms

Meanwhile, weather conditions in southern Nigeria will remain more unstable. NiMet explained that the region will experience sunshine mixed with cloud patches during the day.

In addition, isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall are expected, especially later in the afternoon and evening. Coastal states such as Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are likely to be affected due to increased moisture from the Atlantic Ocean.

Providing further clarity on Thursday’s forecast, the agency stated, “Sunny and hazy skies are expected over the northern and central regions during the forecast period, while sunny skies with patches of clouds are anticipated over the southern region.”

Thunderstorms Expected In Several States

NiMet also revealed that morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall may occur in Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states.

Later in the day, however, thunderstorms may spread to Ondo, Imo, Delta, and other parts of southern Nigeria. Therefore, residents in these areas should prepare for brief but intense weather changes.

Dust Haze To Intensify By Friday

By Friday, NiMet warned that dust haze could become more intense across northern Nigeria. This condition is expected to worsen during the afternoon and evening hours.

Similarly, the North Central region may experience sunny yet hazy skies. In contrast, southern Nigeria is likely to record cloudy mornings, followed by sunny intervals and isolated thunderstorms later in the day.

Health And Travel Advisory Issued

NiMet cautioned that dust particles are currently present over parts of the North Central region. As a result, the agency advised residents to take preventive measures.

People living with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, were specifically urged to limit outdoor exposure. In addition, motorists were advised to drive carefully during rainfall.

“Driving under rain should be with caution. Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations,” the agency stated.

Residents Urged To Stay Informed

Finally, NiMet encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and follow regular weather updates. By doing so, residents can better prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions and reduce potential risks.
