Telecommunications giant Bharti Airtel has reached a major global milestone, crossing 650 million mobile subscribers and officially emerging as the world’s second-largest telecom operator by customer base.
Massive Growth Across Africa and Asia
The milestone, confirmed using data from GSMA Intelligence, highlights Airtel’s rapid expansion across key markets in India and Africa. Bharti Airtel now trails only China’s dominant telecom operators, placing it ahead of several global competitors in subscriber numbers.
A major driver of this growth is its African arm, Airtel Africa, which operates in 14 countries and continues to see rising demand for mobile data, voice services, and mobile money solutions. In Nigeria alone, Airtel has maintained a strong position as one of the top telecom providers, serving tens of millions of subscribers and expanding its network infrastructure significantly in recent years.
The company’s increasing investment in network expansion—growing its sites from about 13,000 to over 17,000—has helped improve coverage and service delivery, particularly in underserved areas.
What This Means for the Telecom Industry
This achievement underscores the growing importance of emerging markets in shaping the global telecom landscape. With smartphone adoption and internet usage rising rapidly across Africa and Asia, Airtel’s user base is expected to grow even further.
Executives have described the milestone as both an achievement and a responsibility, emphasizing continued investment in advanced technologies to deliver faster, more reliable, and secure connectivity.
As competition intensifies with rivals like Reliance Jio and other global operators, Airtel’s 650 million-subscriber mark signals its strong positioning for future growth—especially in data services, fintech, and 5G expansion.
