The Federal Government has intensified efforts to transform Nigeria’s transport sector by inspecting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits in Kano. Under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV).
Officials visited a warehouse containing part of the 100,000 conversion kits and cylinders designated for vehicles including tricycles, cars, and buses. The inspection signals a major step toward accelerating the nationwide rollout of the clean energy programme.
The initiative launched as a response to rising fuel costs and the need for more affordable, sustainable transport alternatives. CNG-powered vehicles are significantly cheaper to run compared to petrol. Making them a key solution for reducing transportation costs for Nigerians.
Kano Emerges as Key Hub for Adoption
According to Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Kano State is leading in adoption. With about 76 conversion centres registered and 41 already operational.
This rapid growth reflects increasing grassroots acceptance and readiness among vehicle owners and transport operators. Officials say the scale of deployment in Kano is a strong indication that the programme is gaining momentum nationwide.
The government aims to expand the initiative across other states, with plans to make conversion kits widely available and affordable. The programme also expected to create jobs, reduce carbon emissions, and lessen Nigeria’s dependence on petrol imports.
Ahmed emphasized that the rollout being executed with urgency. Following directives from President Bola Tinubu to deliver practical solutions to energy and economic challenges.
With thousands of vehicles expected to transition to CNG in the coming months, the initiative is shaping up as a major shift in Nigeria’s transport system—promising cheaper mobility, cleaner energy, and long-term economic benefits.
