The government of Togo has expressed interest in increasing electricity imports from Nigeria as part of efforts to address growing power demand in the country.
According to reports, the planned expansion of electricity supply will facilitated through the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). Which is one of Nigeria’s major power generation and infrastructure companies.
Strengthening Regional Power Supply
The move aimed at helping Togo secure more stable electricity supply to support homes. Businesses, and industrial activities as the country’s economy continues to grow.
West African nations have increasingly relied on regional electricity trade to meet their energy needs. With Nigeria being one of the largest power producers in the region.
Boost for Nigeria’s Power Exports
If the plan moves forward, it could also strengthen Nigeria’s role as a major electricity exporter in West Africa. Allowing the country to generate additional revenue through cross-border power supply agreements. Nigeria already supplies electricity to several neighbouring countries through regional energy cooperation frameworks. Including the West African Power Pool, which connects national electricity grids across the region.
Addressing Energy Challenges
Energy experts say the arrangement could benefit both countries—helping Togo address increasing electricity shortages. While enabling Nigeria to maximize power generation capacity and improve energy trade within West Africa.
The development highlights the growing importance of regional collaboration in solving electricity challenges across the continent.
