The government of Lagos State has directed building owners, developers, and facility managers. Also to register and obtain safety certification for all elevators installed in their buildings before March 31, 2026.
The directive is part of the state government’s effort to improve building safety standards and prevent elevator-related accidents across residential, commercial, and public buildings in the state.
Mandatory Registration and Inspection
Under the new directive, all elevators operating within Lagos must undergo official inspection and safety certification. To confirm that they meet the required safety and operational standards.
Besides, Building owners are expected to register their elevators with the relevant regulatory authorities. And ensure they are regularly maintained and certified to guarantee safe usage by occupants and visitors.
Strengthening Public Safety
However, Authorities say the move is necessary to address concerns about poor maintenance, aging elevator systems, and safety risks in some buildings across the state.
With Lagos being Nigeria’s commercial hub and home to many high-rise residential apartments, offices, and shopping complexes. Ensuring that elevators operate safely has become a major priority.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
The Lagos State Government warned that property owners who fail to comply with the directive before the deadline could face sanctions, including fines or possible shutdown of unsafe elevators.
