Midnight Horror in Lagos: Deadly Lekki-Epe Gas Explosion Kills Two, Destroys Billions in Property

A devastating gas explosion has rocked Lekki-Epe Expressway, leaving two people dead and properties worth billions of naira destroyed.

The incident occurred around 2:36 a.m. on Saturday at Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo, turning what should have been a quiet night into a scene of chaos and destruction.

How the Explosion Happened

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the disaster was triggered by a collision between:

  • A 30-tonne gas tanker
  • A 20-tonne tipper truck approaching from the Epe axis

Reports indicate that the gas tanker had stopped on the highway without properly pulling off the road. The speeding tipper truck rammed into it, igniting a massive fire that quickly escalated into an explosion.

Lives Lost in the Inferno

Authorities confirmed that the tipper driver and his assistant lost their lives in the tragic incident.

Fortunately, the gas tanker driver managed to escape unharmed, though the emotional and physical toll of the disaster remains severe.

Massive Property Damage Recorded

The explosion triggered a fast-spreading fire that engulfed several nearby structures, including:

  • Three warehouses

  • A gym facility
  • A generator house

Vehicles were also affected, with emergency responders recovering:

  • Three Sienna buses
  • A Toyota Corolla

The scale of destruction has been estimated in billions of naira, dealing a heavy blow to business owners in the area.

Firefighters Prevent a Greater Disaster

Emergency responders from multiple stations—including Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe II—arrived swiftly at the scene.

Their rapid intervention was crucial in:

  • Containing the fire
  • Preventing it from spreading further
  • Averting a potential catastrophe

Notably, firefighters stopped the blaze from reaching:

  • A nearby petrol station
  • A fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker

Had the fire spread further, the consequences could have been far more catastrophic.

Recovery Efforts Ongoing

Authorities are currently working to clear the wreckage and restore normalcy to the area.

While activities have gradually resumed, the emotional and economic impact of the incident lingers for victims and affected business owners.

A Stark Reminder of Road Safety Risks

This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns around:

  • Poorly parked heavy-duty vehicles
  • Speeding on major highways
  • Safety regulations for fuel and gas transport

The Lekki-Epe explosion stands as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike.

While two lives were lost and properties destroyed, the swift response of emergency services prevented an even greater disaster—saving countless others in the process.
