Nigeria’s Oil Output Hits 1.8m Barrels Per Day in Major Comeback

Nigeria’s crude oil production has climbed to about 1.8 million barrels oil output per day, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), signaling a strong recovery in the country’s oil sector.

The milestone reflects renewed efforts by the government and industry players to boost output after years of decline. Caused by oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and underinvestment. Recent data shows Nigeria’s production has been steadily rising from averages around 1.6–1.7 million barrels per day, with peaks now approaching 1.8 million.

As Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria depends heavily on crude oil for revenue and foreign exchange. Making increased production a critical factor for economic stability.

Reforms, Security and Investments Driving Growth

The increase in oil output is largely attributed to improved security in oil-producing regions, regulatory reforms, and renewed investments in upstream operations.

Initiatives like the NUPRC’s production boost programmes and faster approval of oil projects have helped restore confidence among investors. Production has already risen significantly from about 1.5 million barrels per day to nearly 1.75 million in recent periods. Showing clear momentum toward higher targets.

The Federal Government is aiming to push production even further. With targets of reaching 2 million barrels per day by 2027 and up to 3 million in the long term.

However, challenges remain. Issues such as fluctuating global oil prices, infrastructure limitations, and occasional production drops still threaten consistency. Recent reports show that output can vary due to operational and market conditions.

Despite this, the current rise to around 1.8 million barrels per day is seen as a positive signal that Nigeria’s oil sector is regaining strength.

If sustained, the growth could significantly boost government revenue. Stabilize the economy, and reinforce Nigeria’s position in the global energy market.
