Edo Approves 100MW Power Plant to Boost Electricity Supply

The Edo State Government has issued a licence for the construction of a 100-megawatt Independent Power Project (IPP). Marking a significant step toward improving electricity supply in the state.

The approval was granted to CCETC–Ogua Energy Limited, with the State Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, formally presenting the licence in Benin City. The project is part of Edo’s broader strategy to strengthen its energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on Nigeria’s national grid.

Independent Power Projects have become increasingly important across Nigeria as states and private investors seek alternative solutions to persistent power shortages. By generating power locally, IPPs help ensure more stable electricity for homes, businesses, and industries.

Boost for Economy and Energy Independence

Officials say the 100MW plant will significantly improve power availability, support industrial growth, and attract new investments into Edo State. Reliable electricity is seen as a critical driver for economic expansion, particularly for manufacturing and small businesses.

The project also aligns with ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. Which now allow states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently under recent constitutional amendments. This has opened the door for more localized energy solutions like Edo’s IPP initiative.

Beyond improving electricity supply , the plant is expected to create jobs during construction and operation. While also enhancing energy security within the state.

Experts note that Edo has been one of the more proactive states in developing its power sector. With previous investments in generation and distribution infrastructure. The new 100MW project further reinforces its ambition to become a model for subnational energy independence in Nigeria.

If successfully delivered, the initiative could reduce outages, lower reliance on diesel generators, and provide a more stable and affordable power supply—offering long-term benefits for residents and businesses alike.
