Pure Water Price Jumps to ₦300 Per Bag in Kano Amid Rising Production Costs

The Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) in Kano has announced a new price increase for sachet water—popularly known as “pure water”—raising the cost of a bag from ₦220 to a minimum of ₦300.

The decision, according to the association, was driven by the sharp rise in the cost of production materials. Which has made it increasingly difficult for producers to maintain previous prices.

Rising Production Costs Behind the Increase

Producers say the price adjustment became necessary due to the escalating cost of essential materials used in sachet water production. These include packaging nylon, water treatment chemicals, electricity, and transportation.

Many small-scale water producers have reportedly struggled to keep their businesses running as inflation continues to push up operating expenses.

Impact on Consumers

Sachet water remains one of the most widely consumed sources of drinking water in many parts of Nigeria due to its affordability and accessibility. However, the new price increase is expected to affect millions of households that rely on it daily.

For many families and small businesses. The rise from ₦220 to ₦300 per bag represents a significant increase in everyday living costs.

Pressure on Small Businesses

Members of the association noted that producers had resisted increasing prices for a long time despite rising expenses. However, the current economic situation made the adjustment unavoidable.

Industry observers say many small water factories have already shut down in recent months due to the rising cost of raw materials and energy.

Part of a Wider Inflation Trend

The increase in pure water price reflects broader economic pressures affecting businesses across Nigeria. Where inflation and currency fluctuations continue to push up the cost of goods and services.

Economists warn that if production costs continue to rise. Other essential consumer products may also see further price adjustments in the coming months.
