The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
According to the commission, the information currently circulating is false and misleading. INEC made the clarification in a statement issued on Friday, January 2, by its Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Chairman, Adedayo Oketola.
INEC Says No Official Timetable Exists
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) clarified that it has not published any timetable or schedule for the 2027 polls. Instead, the commission said the reports did not originate from any of its official channels.
Meanwhile, a purported election timetable has continued to circulate on social media. The document falsely claims that INEC has already fixed key dates and activities for the 2027 elections.

Commission Cites Electoral Act Provisions
According to INEC, the commission operates strictly within the law. Specifically, it cited Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates the publication of a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the election date.
Therefore, INEC stressed that any timetable released outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from the commission.
“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,” the statement said.
Official Timetable to Come Later
INEC assured Nigerians that it would release the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections in due course.
In line with this, the commission said it would act in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.
INEC Urges Public to Ignore Fake Reports
Additionally, INEC said it would communicate the official timetable through its verified and established channels once it is ready.
Consequently, the commission urged members of the public and the media to disregard the fake reports. It advised Nigerians to rely solely on information released through INEC’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative updates.
