The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has discontinued the recognition of the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following ongoing court cases.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mohammed Haruna, national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee, said the commission took the decision in compliance with a court of appeal order.
INEC said it resolved to maintain the status quo ante bellum based on the position of parties before September 2, 2025, when the suit was filed.
The commission said it would refrain from taking any action that could undermine the court proceedings or pre-empt the final judgment.
It also rejected a request by the plaintiff’s solicitors to allow Nafiu Bala Gombe to take over the affairs of the party pending the determination of the case.
INEC said it will no longer engage with any faction of the ADC until the federal high court delivers its ruling.
“The commission shall not receive any further communication or deal with any of the parties or groups pertaining to the affairs of the party,” the statement said.
It added that it will not monitor any meeting, congress, or convention organised by any faction of the ADC during the pendency of the case.
INEC also announced that it will remove the names of the current national working committee led by David Mark from its portal.
The commission said the decision followed the court of appeal directive to maintain the existing status before the dispute arose.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality, impartiality, and strict compliance with judicial orders.
It urged political parties and stakeholders to act responsibly and avoid actions that could disrupt preparations for the 2027 general election.
