Iran Demands Emergency UN Meeting Over US-Israeli ‘Aggression’

Iran demanded an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Iranian officials acted on Saturday after United States and Israeli forces carried out airstrikes across Iranian territory.

Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister, Sends Letter to CouncilAbbas Araghchi, Iranian foreign minister, addressed the situation directly. He submitted a formal letter that accused the United States and Israel of illegal aggression.

Moreover, he called for immediate action to stop the attacks. Araghchi stated that the strikes threatened international peace and security.

Letter Outlines Specific Violations

In the official letter, Abbas Araghchi, Iranian foreign minister, wrote, “The Islamic Republic of Iran urgently calls upon the members of the Security Council to convene, without delay, an emergency meeting of the Council to address the U.S. and Israeli regime’s acts of aggression, breach of peace which is a real and serious threat to international peace and security, and to take the necessary and immediate measures to halt this unlawful use of force and to ensure accountability.”

Furthermore, he urged the council to discharge its duties without delay. Araghchi added that the actions violated the United Nations Charter.

Strikes Cause Widespread Damage

The airstrikes targeted cities including Tehran, Isfahan and Tabriz. Reports confirmed explosions near government sites and civilian areas. Iranian authorities reported multiple casualties among civilians.

Iran Asserts Right to Self-Defence

Additionally, Iran invoked Article 51 of the UN Charter. Officials asserted the country’s right to self-defence following the unprovoked strikes. As a result, Iran also launched retaliatory missiles and drones at targets in Israel and US bases in the Gulf region.

Council Schedules Urgent Session

The Security Council agreed to hold the emergency meeting later on Saturday. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres prepared to brief members on the escalation. Russia and China supported the call for the session.

However, tensions remained high as member states monitored the situation closely. Iran insisted on full accountability for the attacks.
