Members of the South-West chapter of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria staged a protest in Lagos. They denounced the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint United States-Israel military strike on Iran.
The event occurred on March 2, 2026, around the Maryland area. Protesters chanted slogans and carried placards that condemned foreign intervention.
Protest Details
Demonstrators marched through streets in Lagos. They waved Iranian flags and held portraits of Khamenei. Meanwhile the group expressed solidarity with Iran. Meanwhile similar actions took place in Kano, Sokoto, Gombe, Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, and Yobe states. Security forces monitored the rallies closely. However, no violence occurred during the demonstrations.
Leaders’ Statements
Muftau Zakariya, South West coordinator of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, addressed the media. He stated, “The protest was organised to express our concerns about sustained invasions of sovereign nations by the United States administration.”
Zakariya added, “I said to you that nothing good is coming from the US intervention. It is only interested in their economic gains and not minding the consequences thereafter.” He cited increased terrorism in Nigeria since US involvement and mentioned attacks in Kwara State.
Muhammadu Bashir, a leader of the movement, spoke out. He explained, “The protest was a way of registering our concerns over the killing of Iranian leaders.” Bashir affirmed, “The protest would remain peaceful and would be sustained across the region.”

The strikes killed Khamenei on February 28, 2026, amid escalating Middle East tensions. Iran declared 40 days of national mourning. Additionally, the protests reflected global outrage among Shi’ite communities. Moreover nigerian police heightened security nationwide in response. As a result, authorities prevented any escalation.
