The Federal Government has appointed Dr. John Nwabueze as the Tax Ombudsman, in accordance with the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025.
This appointment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to implementing sustainable reforms in Nigeria’s tax and revenue administration system.
Nwabueze’s Experience and Background
Before his appointment, Dr. Nwabueze served as Managing Partner of a leading tax advisory firm and Technical Adviser to both the Joint Senate Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Finance. He also advised the Chief Economic Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He holds a Doctor of Business Administration (Finance) from Walden University, USA, a Master’s degree in Accounting from Strayer University, Washington D.C., and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Mathematics from the University of Jos.
Office of the Tax Ombudsman: Purpose and Mandate
The Office of the Tax Ombudsman was created to enhance transparency, fairness, and accountability in Nigeria’s tax system. It will manage and resolve disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities efficiently and impartially.
The office will handle complaints relating to taxes, levies, customs duties, and excise matters in accordance with existing laws. It will also protect taxpayers from abuse or arbitrary actions by tax officials. President Tinubu expressed confidence in Dr. Nwabueze’s ability to perform his duties with professionalism and integrity.
