Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone, urged regional unity to combat insecurity and poverty during the 17th Armed Forces Day celebrations. The event occurred on February 18, 2026, at Julius Maada Bio Parade Square in Wilberforce Barracks, Freetown. However attendees included government officials, diplomats, and military personnel.
Keynote Address and Tributes
Bio delivered a keynote address under the theme Rebuilding the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces through Strategic Transformation for Enhanced National Security and Development.
He paid tribute to fallen heroes and commended the forces for professionalism. Bio stated: “Our armed forces have come a long way in earning the trust of the people and the respect of the international community.”
Additionally he emphasized reforms and modern equipment. Bio said: “As we rebuild the RSLAF through strategic transformation, we must ensure that professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights remain at the core of our military culture.”
Announcements on Welfare and Policy
Bio announced a 25 percent salary increase for all ranks effective April 2026. He also launched the National Defence Policy and Strategy. Furthermore Bio highlighted gender inclusion progress with female representation at 14.7 percent. Meanwhile he called for reaching the 30 percent quota.
Awards and Regional Emphasis
The ceremony featured awards to international figures. Moreover Bio conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel on Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria, for ECOMOG contributions.
Bio stated: “The award honors Oluyede’s ECOMOG service and the critical roles played by Nigerian officers and soldiers in restoring peace.”
Martin Luther Agwai, retired General of Nigeria, received a similar honor. Meanwhile Bio urged West African leaders to reject military takeovers. He said: “As ECOWAS Chair, I will continue to work with my peers to reject the normalization of military takeovers in our region.”
