Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurated major electrification projects in Badagry on Wednesday. He commissioned the works to tackle longstanding power shortages in the border communities. The move formed part of broader efforts to strengthen the state’s energy sector.
Sanwo-Olu unveiled three high-capacity tower crossings. He also commissioned rehabilitated 33-kilovolt distribution lines along the Gbaji-Seme and Owode-Apa corridors. In addition, officials connected 51 transformer substations in Badagry West Local Council Development Area.
Governor Addresses Power Supply Gains
Sanwo-Olu promised improved electricity supply for residents and businesses. He spoke at the event about the direct benefits of the new infrastructure. “These electrification projects being commissioned will significantly strengthen power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor, enabling thousands of homes, shops, and businesses to benefit from improved and more stable electricity supply,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Initiative Spurs Economic Growth
Additionally, Sanwo-Olu linked the projects to greater economic growth. He highlighted how reliable power would support trade and productivity in the area. The governor noted that border communities such as Badagry must benefit from sustained investment in infrastructure that supports trade, productivity, and community wellbeing.
State Advances Energy Regulation
Furthermore, Sanwo-Olu committed to expanded energy regulation across Lagos. He pointed to the recent inauguration of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission board as a key step forward.
Sanwo-Olu stated, “With the recent inauguration of the Board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Lagos is positioning itself to regulate and expand electricity supply more effectively, ensuring that infrastructure investments such as this deliver lasting benefits to our people.”
