The Lagos State Police Command has declared Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and politician, wanted for allegedly planning to incite unrest and block major roads in the state. Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh announced this on Monday during a press briefing at the Iyana-Oworo section of the Third Mainland Bridge.
Warnings Ignored Before Protest Plan
According to Jimoh, Sowore ignored several police warnings not to organize protests over the recent demolition of houses in Oworonshoki. He said the command received intelligence that the protest could disrupt public peace and worsen traffic congestion.
Moreover, the Commissioner explained that the police had reached out to Sowore multiple times to dissuade him. However, despite those efforts, Sowore allegedly continued mobilizing supporters for the planned protest.
Police Concern Over Public Safety
Jimoh expressed concern that such an action could create panic and hinder free movement. He emphasized that while citizens have the right to protest, it must be done peacefully and lawfully.
Furthermore, he warned that the command would not allow anyone to disrupt the stability of Lagos. “Lagos already faces heavy traffic daily,” Jimoh said. “Therefore, we cannot permit any movement that worsens the situation or endangers lives.” In addition, police patrols have been intensified in sensitive areas to ensure safety and prevent any outbreak of violence.
Sowore Formally Declared Wanted
The Commissioner then declared Sowore wanted for allegedly attempting to disturb public peace. He stated that law enforcement would act swiftly to stop any illegal demonstration. “I hereby declare Omoyele Sowore wanted for acts capable of disturbing public order,” Jimoh said firmly.
Consequently, the police also warned other groups planning similar activities to desist or face legal action. All public gatherings, he reminded, must obtain prior approval from the police.
Conclusion: Police Reaffirm Peace and Order
In conclusion, the Lagos Police Command reassured the public of its full commitment to peace and order. It urged residents to express grievances through lawful means and to cooperate with security agencies to maintain safety across the state.
