Lagos Resumes Monthly Sanitation Exercise After Nine-Year Break

The Lagos State Government announced on Saturday that it will resume its monthly environmental sanitation exercise on April 25, marking the end of a nine-year hiatus.

Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for environment and water resources in Lagos, made the announcement shortly after Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state, and Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor, participated in a symbolic street cleaning exercise to herald the program’s return. The monthly sanitation exercise first faced suspension in November 2016. A court ruling at that time declared the restriction of movement during the exercise unconstitutional, forcing the state government to halt the program.

Wahab emphasized the administration’s commitment to environmental cleanliness. He stated, “The return of the monthly sanitation exercise demonstrates our unwavering dedication to making Lagos cleaner and healthier for all residents.”

Furthermore, the commissioner outlined the government’s approach to the revived program. He added, “We have reviewed the previous challenges and will implement the exercise in a manner that respects citizens’ rights while ensuring environmental standards are maintained.”

The governor and his deputy led by example during the symbolic cleaning. Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the exercise. He said, “This administration believes in leading from the front. When our leaders participate directly in sanitation activities, it sends a clear message about our priorities.”

Hamzat also addressed residents. He noted, “Cleanliness remains a collective responsibility. The government will play its part, but we urge every Lagosian to embrace this culture of environmental consciousness.”
