Liverpool vs PSV match at Anfield with players in action

Liverpool endured their second consecutive home defeat as PSV Eindhoven defeated the Reds 4-1 in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash at Anfield.

PSV Take Early Lead

PSV got off to a perfect start, earning a penalty inside the third minute after Virgil van Dijk handled the ball. Ivan Perisic calmly converted from the spot, giving the visitors an early advantage. Van Dijk has now conceded three penalties this season, the most among Premier League players.

Liverpool Respond

Dominik Szoboszlai drew Liverpool level after goalkeeper Matej Kovar parried Cody Gakpo’s shot, allowing Szoboszlai to tap in. Yarek Gasiorowski appeared to restore PSV’s lead, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Mohamed Salah nearly scored after Gakpo set him up, but Anass Salah-Eddine’s timely intervention kept the Dutch side ahead.

Van Dijk had a header from a corner strike the woodwork, as he attempted to make amends for his early mistake.

PSV Regain Control

After halftime, Liverpool had the first shot on target, with Szoboszlai forcing a save from Kovar. However, PSV quickly regained momentum. Guus Till headed Mauro Junior’s pass past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to give the visitors the lead once more.

Gakpo missed a golden opportunity to level the game again, sending Szoboszlai’s precise cross wide.

Liverpool Collapse

Couhaib Driouech capitalized on defensive errors from Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to extend PSV’s lead. He then completed the scoring in stoppage time, calmly finishing into the bottom right corner to seal a historic win for the Dutch side.

Historic PSV Victory

PSV recorded their first-ever victory at Anfield. The win lifts PSV to 14th in their Champions League group, while Liverpool drops to 12th.

Liverpool will now look to regroup and recover points in their remaining group fixtures, as pressure mounts on manager Jürgen Klopp following back-to-back defeats at home.
