Fayose Releases Evidence of N50bn Given to Makinde by FG

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has released documents he described as evidence to support his claim that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received N50bn from the Federal Government after the January 2024 Ibadan explosion.

Fayose made the disclosure on Sunday, days after Makinde challenged him to provide proof of the allegation. He said he decided to act in the interest of transparency and public accountability.

The former governor had earlier stated on national television that the Federal Government approved the funds as intervention support following the deadly Ibadan blast.

Fayose alleges misuse of Ibadan explosion funds

Fayose claimed that the Oyo State Government released only N4.5bn to victims of the explosion. He alleged that the state diverted the remaining funds to political activities.

He linked the issue to internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Fayose accused Makinde of using the controversy to attack President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government.

Fayose said he usually avoids releasing official documents to the public. However, he argued that Makinde’s public comments on private meetings with the President made full disclosure necessary.

Former Ekiti governor challenges Makinde

Fayose challenged Makinde to seek legal action if the claims are false. He said he possesses additional documents on other intervention funds allegedly received by Oyo State.

He also claimed that records of Oyo State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) differ from figures announced by the state government. However, he said he would release those documents at a later time.

As of the time of filing this report, Makinde had not issued a fresh response to Fayose’s latest claims.

The development has intensified political debate in Oyo State and renewed calls for transparency in the management of public funds.
