The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control issued an alert about a suspected revalidated batch of SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula. The agency released the warning on its official X handle on Sunday. Officials discovered the product for sale in Kaduna State.
Product Details Emerge
The affected batch carried number 22939510A1206 07:35. It showed a manufacturing date of January 20, 2025, and an expiry date of July 6, 2028. However a preprinted sticker on top displayed inconsistent dates with the original print below. This discrepancy confirmed suspicions of tampering and revalidation.
Linked Health Concerns
A four-month-old infant experienced gastrointestinal distress after consuming the formula. The child’s symptoms included vomiting and diarrhea. Caregivers reported the incident to authorities, which prompted the investigation.
Agency’s Investigation

NAFDAC conducted checks and verified the alterations. The agency stated, “The manufacturing and expiry dates on the top preprinted sticker were inconsistent with the underlying, originally printed version.” Furthermore, officials linked the product to potential health risks due to improper storage or contamination during revalidation.
Public Safety Measures
Mojisola Adeyeye urged consumers to avoid products with tampered packaging. Adeyeye, who serves as Director General of NAFDAC, emphasized vigilance. She stated, “Healthcare providers, caregivers, and the public should report any suspicious products to NAFDAC.” Meanwhile the agency encouraged submissions via email or phone for further action.
Ongoing Monitoring
In conclusion, NAFDAC continued surveillance in markets nationwide. The alert formed part of broader efforts to combat counterfeit goods. Moreover no arrests occurred immediately after the discovery.
