The National Sports Commission confirmed that Nigeria submitted a formal bid to host the 2031 African Games. The commission announced the development on Saturday as it prepared to receive delegates from the African Union Sports Council for an official inspection tour.
The bid represents Nigeria’s attempt to bring the continental multi-sport event back to the country for the first time since 2003, when Abuja hosted the eighth edition of the games.
AUSC Delegation Arrives for Assessment
A delegation from the African Union Sports Council arrived in Nigeria to evaluate the country’s readiness to stage the 2031 tournament. The inspection team will assess existing sports infrastructure, accommodation facilities, and transportation networks during their visit.
The council’s evaluation forms a critical component of the bidding process. Consequently, the outcome of this tour will influence the final decision on the host nation.
Official Statements on the Bid
The National Sports Commission expressed confidence in Nigeria’s proposal. A spokesperson for the commission stated, “Nigeria possesses the infrastructure and the passion to deliver an exceptional African Games.”
Furthermore, the commission emphasized its commitment to meeting all requirements set by the continental sports governing body. As reported by ALO360, the spokesperson added that the country had invested substantially in upgrading its sports facilities over the past decade.
