NDLEA Arrests Ex-Convict, 3 Others Over UK-Bound Cocaine

NDLEA operatives seized 1.50 kilograms of cocaine hidden in 75 parcels of cold-water starch sachets at Lagos airport. Authorities discovered the UK-bound consignment during routine checks at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport export shed. This action thwarted a sophisticated smuggling attempt.

Further, agents arrested three cargo handlers on December 20, 2025. The suspects include Jubrin Firdausi Hassana, Kuku Daniel Oluwasegun, and Igwe Chioma Jane, who assisted in the smuggling of the concealed drugs.

Mastermind’s Capture

Investigators traced the operation to Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil, a 37-year-old ex-convict. They apprehended him on December 21, 2025, at a relaxation center in Ikeja while he enjoyed a date with his girlfriend.bd3f13 Basil orchestrated the scheme.

Moreover records show Basil’s prior conviction in 2023 for trafficking 30.10 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in custard containers. A court sentenced him to five years or a ₦7 million fine plus community service. He paid the fine and quickly resumed criminal activities.

Larger NDLEA Actions

NDLEA ramps up operations. For example, they destroyed tons of cannabis in the Ara forest in Ekiti and seized another 638 kilograms of cannabis on December 22, 2025.9 They also seized 883.1 kilograms of compressed cannabis in Edo State.

Moreover there were arrests made in Cross River, where the suspects were in possession of more than 900 kilograms of skunk. A 65-year-old truck driver was charged with transporting opioids in Gombe.

Implications and Future Actions

This case brings to light flaws in sentencing, according to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, who criticized Nigerian justice arrangements for engendering repeat offenses.

In addition to this, NDLEA has also vowed to ensure proper enforcement. Chairman of NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended his men and called for vigilance during festivities.
