A New Year accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has left an unconfirmed number of passengers feared dead after a serious collision on Thursday.
The crash involved an 18-seater commercial bus and a truck. It occurred around the NASFAT axis of the busy highway, causing panic among motorists and nearby residents.
Although emergency responders were expected at the scene, authorities had not released official casualty figures as of the time of filing this report.
New Year Accident Involves Bus, Truck Near NASFAT Axis
Witnesses said the commercial bus was travelling outbound from Lagos when the crash happened. According to them, the bus rammed into the truck while attempting a U-turn on the expressway.
As a result, several passengers reportedly sustained severe injuries. Some were seen lying unconscious on the road moments after the impact.
Meanwhile, images and videos circulating online showed bystanders rushing to assist injured victims. Traffic slowed significantly as people gathered at the scene.
Police, FRSC Yet to Issue Statement on New Year Accident
For now, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued an official statement on the incident.
However, residents and road users have renewed calls for stricter traffic control on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Many have also urged authorities to curb illegal U-turns and reckless driving on the highway.
Additionally, safety advocates continue to stress the need for faster emergency response along the corridor.
Accident Follows Recent Fatal Crash on Same Expressway
The New Year accident occurred just days after another fatal crash on the same expressway involving a Lexus sports utility vehicle (SUV) conveying former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
That earlier accident claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, while the boxer sustained injuries.
As investigations into both incidents continue, concerns over safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have intensified. Authorities are expected to provide updates as more details emerge.
