The National Assembly is taking steps to include Nigerians abroad in national elections. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, announced that lawmakers are moving forward with the Diaspora Voting Bill. He spoke during the Nigerian Stakeholders Engagement on Diaspora Governance (NiSEDiG 2025) and the launch of the Nigerians in Diaspora Response (NiDRes) App and Website.
Strengthening Inclusive Democracy
Represented by Hon. Patrick Umoh, Abbas said the bill aims to ensure that Nigerians living abroad can take part in shaping the nation’s future. He emphasized that the 10th House of Representatives is focused on inclusion, transparency, and accountability. According to him, engaging the diaspora community is crucial to achieving true national participation.
Connecting Nigerians Abroad
Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora, Hon. Tochukwu Chinedu Okere, said the NiSEDiG 2025 project blends policy and technology to strengthen diaspora governance. Through the NiDRes App, Nigerians abroad can easily access government services and stay informed. This digital system will also make communication between diaspora groups and government institutions smoother.
NiDCOM’s Achievements and Challenges
NiDCOM Chairperson Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the progress made since the commission’s creation six years ago. She noted that Nigeria’s relationship with its diaspora has grown across sectors like ICT, health, and education. She also revealed that diaspora remittances hit $23.81 billion in 2019, contributing about 6% of Nigeria’s GDP. However, she urged more funding and reforms to the NiDCOM Act for better sustainability.
Conclusion
The Diaspora Voting Bill and NiDRes platform show Nigeria’s determination to connect citizens at home and abroad. By integrating technology and governance, the country is building a more inclusive democracy where every Nigerian’s voice counts.
