Security expert Abayomi Nurain Mumuni has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to reconsider naming Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern.” He said the nation’s insecurity stems from terrorism and weak border control, not religion.
In a statement released on Sunday through his aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni noted that the U.S. should adopt a more accurate view of Nigeria’s situation. Moreover, he explained that foreign-backed terrorist groups exploit the country’s porous borders to move fighters, weapons, and funds with ease.
‘Fulani Bandits’ Label Misleading
According to Mumuni, describing the attackers as “Fulani bandits” is both misleading and divisive. Instead, he said those responsible for the violence operate as organised criminal networks across West Africa, not as representatives of any ethnic or religious group.
The APC chieftain added that calling the violence religious only worsens mistrust among citizens. “Indiscriminate killings in Nigeria affect everyone, Christians and Muslims alike. To describe these attacks as religiously motivated is to distort reality and deepen division where unity is needed most,” he said.
Calls for Stronger Action and Global Partnership
Furthermore, Mumuni urged the Federal Government to officially name the armed groups and their sponsors as terrorists. According to him, this would enhance Nigeria’s legal framework and attract greater international support. “By formally designating these groups as terrorists, Nigeria demonstrates determination to confront the menace decisively. It also positions the country to build stronger global alliances against terrorism,” he said.
In addition, he called on the U.S. to back regional cooperation that targets those funding extremist networks. Meanwhile, he urged West African nations to collaborate on intelligence sharing and border security. “Those responsible should face international arrest warrants and targeted sanctions that will cripple their operations,” he added.
Conclusion
Ultimately, Mumuni appealed to President Trump to consider Nigeria’s complex realities before making policy decisions. Therefore, he said, sustained global engagement is key to restoring peace, rebuilding trust, and strengthening national unity. As a result, Nigeria can move closer to lasting stability and inclusive security.
