Soldiers in the Benin Republic launched a surprise coup at dawn on Sunday. Led by Colonel Pascal Tigri, they seized the National TV station and announced they had overthrown President Patrice Talon. They also suspended all democratic institutions, which threatened the country’s 35-year-old democracy.
Benin Requests Urgent Help
The Benin government acted quickly. Through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it sent a Note Verbale to Nigeria. Officials requested immediate air support to protect constitutional order, national institutions, and public safety.
Additionally, Benin asked for Nigerian Air Force assets to patrol its airspace. They sought surveillance and rapid intervention under Benin’s coordination. Finally they requested Nigerian ground forces for approved missions to contain armed groups and safeguard institutions.
Nigeria Responds Swiftly
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the requests without delay. He first ordered Nigerian fighter jets to enter Benin and secure the airspace. These jets helped dislodge coup plotters from the National TV and a military camp.
Meanwhile Nigeria deployed ground forces as requested. Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede confirmed full compliance. He stated that troops followed President Tinubu’s orders to support Benin’s command.
Order Returns
Loyal Beninese forces, with Nigerian assistance, regained control after several hours. They flushed out the plotters from key sites. As a result, constitutional order returned to Benin.
President Tinubu Praises Troops
President Tinubu commended Nigeria’s military for their gallantry. He noted that they acted within the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. Furthermore he expressed pride in their role as defenders of democratic values.
Nigeria Stands Firm
Nigeria’s actions stabilized Benin and reinforced regional democracy. President Tinubu affirmed Nigeria’s support for Benin’s government and people. This event highlights Nigeria’s commitment to democratic ideals since 1999.
