Nigeria Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Unity, Rejects Somaliland Independence

Nigeria has reaffirmed its firm support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of Somalia.
The Federal Government warned international actors against actions that could undermine Somalia’s constitutional order.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria remains committed to respecting the political independence of all United Nations and African Union member states.

FG Warns Against Undermining Somalia’s Constitutional Order

The ministry stressed that Nigeria recognises the government in Mogadishu as the only legitimate authority representing the Somali people.
It praised Somalia’s leadership for pursuing peace and national reconciliation despite persistent security challenges.

According to the statement, Nigeria stands in solidarity with Somalia and strongly condemns any rhetoric or actions that threaten its unity and statehood.

Nigeria Rejects Recognition of Somaliland

Nigeria also cautioned foreign governments against recognising any part of Somalia as an independent entity.
It warned that such moves could escalate tensions and further destabilise the Horn of Africa.

The Federal Government urged regional and global actors to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and support its institutions as they rebuild a stable and resilient nation.

Reaction to Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

The statement followed Israel’s recent decision to recognise Somaliland, a self-declared autonomous region in north-western Somalia.
Somaliland has operated independently since 1991 but lacks international recognition.

The move drew criticism from the African Union and several countries, including Somalia, which described the decision as unlawful.

AU, Egypt Condemn Somaliland Recognition

The African Union reaffirmed that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of Somalia.
It warned that recognising breakaway regions sets a dangerous precedent for Africa’s stability.

Similarly, Egypt said unilateral actions that undermine Somalia’s sovereignty threaten regional peace and must be rejected.
