The Federal Government of Nigeria expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Gulf region. Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria expresses deep concern over the rising tensions in the Gulf region and the risk of further escalation with potentially grave consequences for regional and global stability.”
Moreover Nigeria urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and prioritize dialogue.
In addition, Ebienfa emphasized adherence to international laws. He said, “We urge strict adherence to the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Convention, particularly taking into cognisance the respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.” Nigeria supported diplomatic initiatives for peace.
Advisory to Nigerian Citizens
Meanwhile the government issued a security advisory to Nigerians in Iran and neighboring Gulf states. Ebienfa advised vigilance and avoidance of sensitive areas.
He noted, “The Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran and embassies in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been placed on alert to provide consular support and facilitate communication with Nigerians who may require assistance.” Citizens complied with local directives amid hostilities.
Regional Conflict Background
The tensions stemmed from United States and Israel strikes on Iranian targets, including military sites. Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced operations to eliminate threats from Iran.
Iran retaliated with missile attacks on Israel and US bases in Gulf countries like Bahrain and Qatar. Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, defended the response as legitimate self-defense.
International Reactions
Other nations reacted variably. Saudi Arabia condemned Iran’s strikes and offered support to affected states. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, denounced the use of force by all sides.
However countries like Russia supported Iran and called the attacks unprovoked. Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and peaceful resolutions.
